Finidi George recounts terrible experience over brother's death

- Finidi George lost his younger brother who was a promising footballer in 1995

- The late George was a member of the Golden Eaglets' squad to the 1995 Fifa U17 World Cup

- Finidi has now revealed that he still doesn't know who killed his brother till this moment

Former Nigerian international Finidi George has decried the death of his younger brother Igeniwari George who was shot during a Nigerian league game at Ibadan in 1995.

Igeniwari was killed during a crowd incident during an FA Cup game between Rangers International and Stationery Stores at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.

He was a member of the Golden Eaglets team to the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Ecuador in August that same year he was killed.

And about 25 years after the incident, Finidi who was a crucial player for the Ajax Amsterdam at that time lamented the ordeal saying the experience was terrible.

“It was a terrible experience; I got the news of his death hours before an away game for Ajax. Van Gaal asked me if I could play or I needed some time off but I told him I want to play," Finidi told Legit.ng during a live Instagram chat.

“I played in that game but it wasn’t one of my best games. Days later, I travelled to Nigeria to see my late brother’s body but the police said they were doing some investigations concerning his death and can’t release the body."

The former Super Eagles star also lamented that 25 years after the incident, the police are yet to unravel the mystery and bring the culprits to book as he still doesn't know who killed his brother.

“After spending some days in Nigeria, I had to go back to Europe as it was taking so long for my brother’s body to be released. I went back to Nigeria again but I still couldn’t see him so I went back to my club.

“That was how I missed his burial and till today, we don’t know who killed him as the police never got back to us with their investigation.”

Legit.ng earlier reported that former Nigerian international Finidi George has stated that he was not aware some players had ladies in their rooms prior to their second-round loss to Denmark at the 1998 World Cup in France.

Legendary Super Eagles defender Taribo West earlier claimed that some of his teammates had sneaked women into their hotel rooms before that game.

Recall that Nigeria stole the show in the group stages after upsetting European giants Spain and Bulgaria in their first two games, before going down 1-0 against Paraguay in their last fixture, but that didn’t stop the Super Eagles from topping Group D as the team became very popular in France.
