The world champions need one point from their final group game against Peru to emerge as group winners, an important step towards defending the title they won three years ago in Brazil.

Bravo denies Messi an Olimpico

Messi failed to find the back of the net again, having missed a plethora of chances to score in the 2-0 win over Canada in the opening match.

As seen in footage going viral on social media, in the 86th minute of the match against Chile, he attempted to score directly from a corner kick but was denied by former Barca teammate Claudio Bravo.

He placed the resulting corner in the box, and the scramble led to Lautaro Martinez firing home to give the world champions a vital win and progression to the knockout stage.

How many times has Messi attempted an Olimpico?

According to The Athletic, the first player credited with scoring the first of its kind was Argentine star Cesareo Onzari during a friendly against Uruguay in 1924.

It's been 100 years since his compatriot scored the first, and the Inter Miami captain is trying to score one too. There's a YouTube compilation of his many attempts, which numbers over 20 times.

Will Messi play against Peru?

Sports Brief reported on Lionel Messi delivering his fitness update after suffering an injury against Chile, even though he was able to play the full 90 minutes.

The injury puts his chance of playing the final group game against Peru in doubt. The world champions have progressed to the next round, and he might get a deserved rest.
