Peter Drury delivered one of the year's finest commentary moments when Mattia Zaccagni scored a late equaliser for defending champions Italy in their Euro 2024 clash against Croatia.

Italy secured their spot in the last-16 on Monday night thanks to super sub Zaccagni, who levelled the score with a stunning curling shot from the left side of the penalty area, nullifying Luka Modric's earlier opener.

While Croatia still has a slim chance of advancing to the knockout stages, their fate depends on favourable outcomes in other matches involving teams like England and Turkey, making their progression unlikely.

Monday's in-game action featured what could be considered the tournament's most dramatic moment so far, and commentator Peter Drury captured the excitement perfectly.

Drury's commentary on Italy's goal vs Croatia

Signed by Sky Sports in June to replace the legendary Martin Tyler, Drury added yet another iconic moment to his repertoire as he narrated the Italians' unforgettable last-minute heroics.

"Salvation. The Azzurri reach for the skies and Croatia hit the turf in sorrow," says Drury. "Oh boy. The Modric marvel is undone by the zest of Zaccagni. How it must feel to be Croatian.
"Croatia crushed. Italy weeping tears of relief. Football taking human beings to places they hadn't imagined. Croatia could see the line. They were there the last 16 had all but embraced them.
"And with the last Zaccagni came up with a gem. And Italy having stared into the abyss. Embrace each other joyfully now and embrace their ongoing involvement at Euro 2024. This game tears you up.
"When you think you've seen it all, it delivers again. Drama and trauma in equal measure."

Modric makes Euro history

Croatian captain Modric has made history at the European Championship.

The Madrid midfielder became the oldest-ever scorer in the tournament’s history.

Modric grabbed Croatia’s opening goal against Italy, Sports Brief reported.
