Croatia captain, Luka Modric, wrote his name in the sands of time, becoming the oldest goal-scorer in the history of the European Championship.

The Real Madrid midfield maestro found the net moments after missing a penalty against Italy ten minutes into the second half.

At 38, Modric broke the previous record held by Ivica Vastic, who was 38 years and 257 days old when he scored for Austria against Poland at Euro 2008, per UEFA.com.

Despite Modric's personal achievement, his goal was not enough to secure a win for Croatia.

A late equaliser from Mattia Zaccagni in the 98th minute ensured a 1-1 draw, leaving both teams with a share of the points.

The result leaves Zlatko Dalic's men in third place with only two points, giving them a slim chance of progressing to the knockout stage.

After the heart-wrenching nature of the game, Luka described Italy's last-minute equaliser as a "cruel" blow.

"We kept battling right until the end but unfortunately football was merciless with us tonight," said Modric, as quoted by The Athletic.
"It was cruel... but that's part and parcel of football."

Guinness World Record celebrates Modric

While the result was heartbreaking for the veteran midfielder and his Croatian teammates, Guinness World Records acknowledged the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner's latest milestone.

"Luka Modric is the definition of fine wine," wrote the GWR on X (formerly called Twitter).

How can Croatia still qualify for R16?

In a related report, Sports Brief highlighted that Croatia's route to the Euro 2024 knockout stages is still possible despite finishing the group stage with only two points.

For the Vatreni to advance, certain results must go their way.

Zlatko Dalic's men are currently fifth in the six-team ranking, just ahead of Czechia, which has one game remaining in Group F.

Although the odds are not in Croatia's favour, tournament football's inherent unpredictability means surprising outcomes can still occur.
