Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been bluntly informed he won't make England's current starting lineup.

The veteran forward, participating in his record-extending sixth European Championship, has been crucial for the Selecao at Euro 2024, including a tournament record-tying assist in their 3-0 victory over Turkey.

Although he hasn't scored in his side's opening two matches, Ronaldo has led the 2016 champions to consecutive wins, securing an early spot in the knockout stage, UEFA.com reports.

Despite his numerous records in the quadrennial tournament, doubts have been raised about his current contributions, especially given his age.

Known for his explosive speed, skill, and sharp goal-scoring ability, the Al-Nassr frontman has understandably slowed down due to ageing.

This has led critics to argue that his prime is over and he doesn't deserve a starting position. Nevertheless, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has continued to trust him.

However, former striker-turned-pundit Ally McCoist believes the 39-year-old wouldn't be good enough to start for England.

Ronaldo told he won't make England's lineup

McCoist's verdict is clear, suggesting that "father time" has finally caught up with the Portuguese superstar as he nears the end of his illustrious career.

"Saying Cristiano Ronaldo wouldn't play for England, I think it's probably right. Five or ten years ago, he walked in, and it would be him and 10 others, but father time has caught up to him, as it does to everybody," he told BoyleSports, as quoted by GOAL.
"I think that's where he is at this moment in time, and I don't think he gets in the England starting 11."

Why Rooney wants Portugal-England final at Euro 2024

In a related publication, Sports Brief reported that Wayne Rooney has shared his ideal scenario for the Euro 2024 final on July 14, hoping for a clash between England and Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal.

The legendary English striker expressed a preference for a showdown between his home country and the Selecao.

Rooney explained that his choice for an England-Portugal final is driven by personal motivations.
