Own goals have taken centre stage at this year’s European championships, with six players scoring against their own teams in the group stage alone.

None of the own goals, however, have been more comical than the one witnessed during Turkey’s game against Portugal on Saturday, June 22.

After both nations won their opening games against Georgia and Czech Republic, respectively, the clash was expected to be competitive despite Roberto Martinez’s side being overwhelming favourites.

Selecao took the lead at the Dortmund stadium through Manchester City winger Bernardo Silva, who connected with a cutback to slam the ball inside the right post for his maiden goal at a major tournament.

Amid a dominant spell by Portugal, they received a gift of a goal in the 28th minute thanks to an unlucky moment by Samat Akaydin.

The defender passed the ball back to his goalkeeper, Altay Bayandir, who knew very little about it and was off his line. The ball crept into the net as the two Turkish players desperately scrambled back in vain.

Portugal too strong for Turkey

Portugal went into halftime with a comfortable 2-0 lead and in full control of their fate as far as qualification to the last 16 was concerned.

The Euro 2016 winners added a third in the second half, as Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes combined for the Manchester United midfielder’s 19th goal involvement in 15 games for his country, according to ESPN.

With two wins from two, Selecao secured their place in the knockout stages of the competition.

Georgia’s miss of the tournament contender

In the other Group F game, Georgia produced a miss of the tournament contender during their clash against Czech Republic in the earlier kickoff.

With the clock winding down and the scores deadlocked at 1-1, Georgia found themselves in a three-versus-one situation, but Atlanta United midfielder Saba Lobjanidze blasted his shot over the bar with the goalkeeper at his mercy.

As Sports Brief reported, that miss ensured the two nations shared the spoils, favouring neither nation.
