Georgia squandered the chance to claim all three points against the Czech Republic with a last-minute howler at Volksparkstadion on June 22, 2024.

The two nations went into their second Group F game needing a win after losing their opening games to Turkey and Portugal, respectively.

Kirby Smart’s side took the lead at the stroke of half-time, as Georges Mikautadze slotted home a penalty after Robin Hranec was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box.

Patrik Schick, a newly-crowned Bundesliga champion with Bayer Leverkusen, levelled matters for the Czech Republic, with the ball bouncing off his chest and trickling over the line after Ondrej Lingr’s header came off the post.

Czech Republic looked more likely to score after equalizing, with Ladislav Krejčí heading wide and Matej Jurasek having his long-range effort saved.

Georgia squander late chance

In the fifth minute of added time, Georgia found themselves in a perfect attacking situation. Three players bore down on the Czech Republic goal from a counterattack against a lone defender.

With Czechia players desperately tracking back, the ball was squared to Atlanta United midfielder Saba Lobjanidze, whose effort somehow went over the bar, leaving the crowd at the Volksparkstadion in disbelief.

Nonetheless, Georgia, who are in their first-ever European championships, claimed their first-ever point in the competition with a result that favoured neither of the two nations in the quest to qualify for the knockout stages.

What next for Georgia?

Georgia’s final group game will be a tricky game against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal on Wednesday, June 26.

Euro 2024 tiebreaker rules

Sports Brief also reported on what would happen if two teams are level on points and goal difference.

There is a slim chance England and Denmark could find themselves in this situation as Group C is finely poised.

If this happens, the two teams would have to be separated via a tiebreaker.
