Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has blamed Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford for their disappointing defeat to Sheffield United at Old Trafford.

A goal each from Olivier Burke and Kean Bryan ensured Harry Maguire's 64th-minute goal ended up a mere consolation.

The defeat means the Red Devils remain second on the Premier League table with 40 points, one shy of Manchester City who have a match in hand.

However, the five-game unbeaten run came to an abrupt end on home soil on Wednesday, January 27 and the retired defender believes the above-named stars were culpable.

The 42-year-old while analysing the game told BT Sport after the final whistle:

"They didn't have that zip about them. From minute one, really, there wasn't that cut and thrust we've seen from United.
"Credit Sheffield United, Chris Wilder set them up very well, but United didn't ask the questions. Bruno Fernandes, who they've relied on so heavily in recent weeks, months, didn't get it going today. Paul Pogba the same.
"If anybody was starting to get carried away at Old Trafford, with the position that they're on, it was a reality check.
"I think recently Man Utd, in terms of reaction, have been brilliant but tonight it seemed to come crumbling down. Rashford and Martial were invisible, didn't get on the end of anything, didn't create anything."

Ferdinand also warned his former team that winning the EPL title for the first time since 2013 will not be an easy task despite occupying the second position at the moment. He added:

"If anybody was starting to get carried away at Old Trafford, with the position that they're on, it was a reality check."

Solskjaer's men will hope to return to winning ways when they travel to the Emirates Stadium to battle Arsenal who have won five of their last six Premier League games this year.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo will leave Manchester United a fulfilled footballer following the expiration of his temporary stay at the club.

The 31-year-old former Super Eagles forward arrived at Old Trafford exactly one year ago from Shanghai Shenhua on an initial six months loan deal.

A move the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations highest goals scorer described as a dream come true, however, his reign at the club was extended by another six months after COVID-19 elongated the 2019-20 season.
