Arsenal forward, Gabriel Martinelli, had to be escorted off the pitch by medical staff after a heavy challenge in training from his Brazil teammate Eder Militao.

Brazil kicks off its Copa America campaign on Monday, June 24, 2024, against Costa Rica in Inglewood, United States, with Martinelli now a major doubt for the game.

Footage from one of the Selecao’s latest training sessions, via TNT Sports, showed the 23-year-old Arsenal man getting floored by Militao after connecting with a cross from the right.

The winger stayed on the ground, while Militao controversially walked away from the incident as physios went to check on his teammate.

Brazil defender Gabriel, who is teammates with Martinelli at Arsenal, appeared to be the only player concerned about the extent of the forward’s injury.

After receiving treatment from three medical staff members, Martinelli was seen hobbling off the pitch and was seen struggling to exert weight on his right foot.

Brazil’s Copa America fixtures

After their opener against Costa Rica, Dorival Junior's side will also face Paraguay and Colombia in the group stage.

It is yet to be seen whether Martinelli will be fit enough for any of his nation’s upcoming games – which is a blow to the Arsenal man, mainly because he was looking forward to wearing the famous Samba Boys kit at the Copa America.

"Brazil is my country. It is an honour to be able to represent my people, my family, my friends and all the Brazilian people," he recently told Spanish publication AS.

Argentina’s most important players

Sports Brief also reported on Argentina’s most important players ahead of the upcoming Copa America.

Lionel Messi typically headlines the list, as the Inter Miami star was crucial for his nation during the last edition of the competition.

La Albiceleste won the last Copa America by beating hosts, Brazil, 1-0 at the Maracana Stadium, thanks to Angel Di Maria’s first-half goal that won Lionel Messi his first international trophy.
