Turkey defender Mert Müldür scored an early contender of the Euro 2024 goal-of-the-tournament with an amazing strike against Georgia on Tuesday, June 18.

Football fans have barely recovered from the awe experienced during the Romania versus Ukraine game, when Nicolae Stanciu put his nation into the lead against the Ukranians with a scrumptious finish from 25 yards to beat Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

A day later, Fenerbahce defender Muldur matched his Romanian counterpart’s brilliance with an equally stunning strike.

Turkey started the game against Georgia on the front foot, dominating possession in the opening exchanges.

Vincenzo Montella’s side eventually took the lead in the 24th minute in outrageous style as Muldur volleyed home an unstoppable effort after a clipped ball to the back post was headed out to the edge of the penalty box.

The goal had a striking similarity to one scored by France’s Benjamin Pavard in 2018 during a World Cup knockout game between Argentina and Les Blues.

How the game went

Turkey thought they had gone 2-0 up when Kenan Yıldız ghosted in at the back post to slot home a cross, but the goal was chalked off for offside.

Moments later, it was Georgia’s turn to celebrate as they scored their first goal in the final stages of a major tournament.

Giorgi Kochorashvili produced a great skill to create space for himself before crossing the ball, which met Georges Mikautadze, who squeezed the ball in at the near post.

Real Madrid’s 19-year-old Champions League winner Arda Guler restored Turkey’s lead with a moment of magic after receiving the ball from 25 yards and firing in a brilliant effort past Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Substitute Kerem Akturkoglu then broke clear late on to score into an empty net as Turkey secured a 3-1 win in Dortmund, per BBC.

Arda Guler breaks Cristiano’s record

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported on Arda Guler’s record which he achieved thanks to his goal against Georgia.

Guler was making his debut at the Euros and marked it with one of the goals of the tournament contender.

The Real Madrid star has broken Ronaldo's record by becoming the youngest player to score on his debut in a European Championship finals.
