Kylian Mbappe was given a wholesome welcome by the mascots of the game between France and Austria in the Group D opener at the European Championship in Germany.

The new Real Madrid signing's deflected shot resulted in an own goal which gave the former champions a 1-0 victory in Dusseldorf on Monday, June 17, 2024.

Late in the game, the France captain was replaced by Olivier Giroud after suffering a broken nose, forcing him to leave the pitch with blood oozing all over his face.

In a video shared on social media, Mbappe was swamped by the mascots as they begged him for his signature. The young kids could not hide their delight as they jubilated following their meeting with the forward.

Meanwhile, Mbappe's goal drought at the European Championship was extended after he failed to find the back of the net in the game against Austria.

His evening was, however, marred by a late injury, which will see him wear a protective mask in the next match against the Netherlands.

The 2018 World Cup winner ended his stay at Paris Saint Germain at the end of last season and will join European champions Real Madrid this summer.

The Netherlands defeated Poland in their opening game to go joint-top with France, as reported by CNN.

Mbappe produces early miss of the tournament contender

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Mbappe's search for a first European Championship goal had to be prolonged after missing the best chance of the game between France and Austria.

The new Real Madrid signing might have also produced an early miss of the tournament contender after placing his ball wide when left with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Although he was largely missing in the first half, the France captain forced the opener after his cross was misguided into the wrong net by Austria's Maximilian Wöber.
