It appears to be just a matter of time before Kaizer Chiefs appoint a new permanent manager.

The Soweto-based side have been linked with many big names, both local and abroad.

Nasreddine Nabi remains the favourite to get the job, and the Tunisian recently confirmed that he would be having a meeting with the team president soon, GOAL noted.

With the FAR Rabat manager seemingly certain to get the job, Sports Brief looks at how foreign coaches have fared in the past, from the good to the okay to the downright bad.

Five foreign Kaizer Chiefs managers

Stuart Baxter (Good)

An English manager of Scottish descent, Baxter is one of the club’s most successful managers.

In 2012, his first season at the club, he achieved the cup double, winning the Premier Soccer League title and the Nedbank.

In his third and final season of his first stint, he again won a league and cup double with the side.

It was the last time the Amakhosi lifted any silverware. Baxter was brought back for a second spell in 2021, but failed to achieve the same success.

Muhsin Ertugral (Good)

While he didn’t win the league title with the side, the Turkish manager was one of the club’s most popular and successful coaches.

He spent two separate stints at the side and helped them to lift the 2007 Telkom Knockout trophy and the 2008 MTN8 trophy.

During his first stint, Chiefs also won the 2001 African Cup Winners' Cup, which remains the Amakhosi’s only continental trophy to date.

Ertugral left after just two seasons in his second spell with the side.

Vladimir Vermezovic (Okay)

Many were surprised by the Serbian’s appointment, as he was unknown in the league before being hired.

Vermezovic would be in charge for 109 games, winning over 50% of them.

He won two Telkom Knockout titles, but his tenure was seen as less than successful because he failed to channel for the league title.

With Chiefs on the hunt for a new manager, Vermezovic recently teased that he would be keen to have another crack at the job.

Kosta Papic (Bad)

Another Serbian manager, Papic’s tenure lasted just three months.

He was in charge of the club for just seven fixtures, winning two, losing two and drawing games.

He left the side after setting the lowest win ratio at that time for an Amakhosi coach at 29%. They also finished in ninth place on the table, the lowest they had ever ended a campaign at that stage.

Giovanni Solinas (Bad)

Also with a 29% win ratio, Italy’s Solinas is one of the worst-performing managers in Chiefs history.

Solina was only in charge of the side for 20 games, winning seven, losing six and drawing seven.

Solinas remains the only Italian to have coached in the PSL, but he is instead remembered for his poor track record as a coach.

iDiskiTimes reported last year that he had taken up a post in Saudi Arabia in charge of Al-Najmah, making it the 13th side he’s managed during his professional career.

When Nabi could join Chiefs

Sports Brief recently explored when Nabi could be announced as the new Chiefs manager.

The Tunisian coach is the favourite to land the post, but no deals have been signed yet.

The two parties are currently working on small details before any announcements are made.
