Kylian Mbappe will want to forget France’s opening game of Euro 2024 in a hurry.

The Real Madrid star captained the French side as they took on Austria on June 17 but had a game to forget for various reasons.

Mbappe played a huge part in the only goal of the game, as his cross was deflected into the back of the Austrian net by Maximilian Wöber.

Mbappe misses easy chance, later gets injured

That was the highlight of Mbappe’s game. In the second half, he missed an easy chance to put France 2-0 up before things went from bad to worse for him.

The former Paris Saint-Germain star tried to head home a goal late in the second half but smashed his nose into the shoulder of an Austrian player in the follow-through.

Mbappe was spotted on the floor in agony, and when medical attended to him, his face was covered in blood.

Mbappe shown yellow card despite Deschamps' appeals

The Frenchman was taken off the field of play while holding his nose as France readied a substitution for the ailing captain.

Play continued before Olivier Giroud could be brought on for the 25-year-old. Mbappe then returned to the field before sitting down, prompting the referee to stop the game.

The official ran towards the Frenchman while the fans booed. France coach, Didier Deschamps, tried to argue his star striker’s case, but Mbappe was still shown a yellow for entering the field illegally.

Thankfully for Deschamps' side, they saw out a narrow 1-0 win and will now turn their attention to their next game against the Netherlands on June 21. Mbappe is a doubt for that game as the French manager later confirmed that the player had broken his nose.

eNCA reported that he won't require surgery but will have to wear a mask for the remainder of the tournament.

Mbappe jokes with fans after breaking nose

Sports Brief also reported that Mbappe found the funny side of his unfortunate injury suffered during the game against Austria.

The Real Madrid star captained the French side as they kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with a victory but also broke his nose.

After the match, Mbappe joked with fans online that he would need a mask and asked them to submit their suggestions.
