Kylian Mbappe's search for a first European Championship goal had to be prolonged after missing the best chance of the game between France and Austria.

The new Real Madrid signing might have also produced an early miss of the tournament contender after placing his ball wide when left with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Although he was largely missing in the first half, the France captain forced the opener after his cross was misguided into the wrong net by Austria's Maximilian Wöber.

In a video shared on social media, Mbappe picked up a long pass from Andrien Rabiot after out-pacing his markers and was left with only Patrick Pentz to beat, but the ex-PSG star fired wide.

A disappointed immediately Mbappe held his head as he wondered how he missed that opportunity.

Meanwhile, France were made to work hard as Austria gave them a tough match in the Group D opener at the Merkur Spiel-Arena.

Mbappe was later replaced by Olivier Giroud after suffering a cut to his nose, which left him oozing with blood on his face.

The two-time world champions will next face the Netherlands while Mbappe's hunt for a first Euros goal continues, per UEFA.
