Chelsea striker, Romelu Lukaku, set an unwanted record during Belgium's Euro 2024 group opener against Slovakia.

The former Manchester United star was drafted into the Red Devils' starting line-up for the clash on Monday evening, June 17.

However, Lukaku could not save his side from suffering an embarrassing defeat as their campaign at the Euros began with a stumble.

Belgium's Romelu Lukaku had two goals ruled out by the VAR during their Euro 2024 loss to Slovakia on June 17, 2024.

Ivan Schranz's opening goal inside seven minutes of action was the only difference in the Group E encounter, with Slovakia holding firm to the lead to claim maximum points.

According to the BBC, Belgium was somewhat unlucky not to see off their Euro opposition, with Lukaku having missed three big chances.

The former Inter Milan striker also had two goals ruled out by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Lukaku appeared to have equalised for Belgium shortly after the break, only for his goal to be ruled out for offside.

The 31-year-old also got the ball behind the net deep in the second half, but the goal was chalked off by the VAR for a handball in the build-up.

According to ESPN, Lukaku has now become the first player in the continental tournament's history to have two goals ruled out by the VAR.

Belgium will be hoping to get their Euro campaign back on track when they take on Romania this Saturday, June 22.

Domenico Tedesco's charges will wind up their group-stage fixtures with a clash against Ukraine next Wednesday.

Sports Brief also previously reported on Kevin De Bruyne calming his children shortly after Belgium's Euro defeat on Monday.

The Manchester City playmaker has three kids with wife, Michele: a daughter named Suri and two boys - Rome and Mason.
