Dutch forward, Memphis Depay, sported a distinctive white headband during the Netherlands' Euro 2024 opener against Poland, a look he also adopted in recent friendlies against Canada and Iceland.

The 30-year-old's choice of accessory has sparked considerable discussion on social media, with some Dutch media outlets criticising it.

Depay, however, defended his decision last week, citing the headband's practicality for managing sweat and noting his girlfriend's approval of the look.

"After the Iceland match, I spent 20 minutes with the press, and no one asked about the headband," Depay said via Sportbible.
"Who cares? It looks good on me and helps with sweat. Plus, my girlfriend loves it. Isn't that great? It's a fresh style, and I'm already planning the next colour I'll wear in Germany."

This European Championship is a significant event for Depay, who is just five goals shy of Robin van Persie’s record as the Netherlands' top scorer, per GOAL.

After two seasons with Atletico Madrid, the Ghanaian-born Dutch forward is now a free agent, and his performance in Germany could be pivotal in securing his next club.

The former Barcelona attacker was a key player in the Netherlands' Under-17 team that won the European Championships in 2011 with a 5-2 victory over Germany in the final.

In the current tournament, the Netherlands' Group D also includes France and Austria, alongside Poland.

Group D preview: Netherlands to challenge France

Group D promises to be captivating, featuring former champions France and the Netherlands, along with Poland and Austria.

Sports Brief provides an analysis of these four teams as Euro 2024 kicks off.

Les Bleus are strong favourites to lead the group, but after their victory over Poland on match day one, the Dutch will be confident in their ability to challenge the two-time winners.
