Atletico Madrid forward, Alvaro Morata, has climbed to third in the all-time top scorers in the history of the Euros.

The 31-year-old has been a mainstay in the Spain national football team since making his debut in 2014.

Morata was among the players named in Spain's final team for the Euro 2024 in Germany, with the striker captaining his nation in their Group B opener against Croatia on Saturday evening, June 15.

His presence played a key part in La Roja's 3-0 huge victory in the tie, with the former Real Madrid ace opening the scoring in the 29th minute.

Fabian Ruiz doubled the advantage three minutes later before Dani Carvajal took the game beyond Croatia on the stroke of half-time.

Morata climbs on top scorers' charts

According to a tweet by Fabrizio Romano, Morata's goal was enough to help him climb on the Euros' top scorers' charts.

The Spaniard now ranks third among all-time scorers with seven goals, on level with England legend Alan Shearer and France's Antoine Griezmann.

The former Juventus star has an opportunity to add to his tally during Spain's group-stage fixtures against Italy and Albania.

Luis de la Fuente's charges are scheduled to take on Italy in their next fixture on Thursday, June 20, before rounding up their pool games with a clash against Albania on Monday, June 24.

Who are Euros all-time top scorers?

Cristiano Ronaldo remains the tournament's top scorer in history.

The Al-Nassr superstar has scored 14 goals in the competition, and also holds the record for the most appearances.

France legend Michel Platini sits second on the goal scorers' charts with nine goals.

According to The Mirror, Ronaldo has an opportunity to further extend his lead at the top at Euro 2024 in what is likely his last appearance in the tournament.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is part of Portugal's star-studded team in Germany.

Considering his recent form, the 39-year-old is likely to lead Portugal's attack in their Group F opener against the Czech Republic on Tuesday, June 18.

Turkey and Georgia are the other two countries also in the pool.

Elsewhere, Morata and Griezmann are also likely to surpass Platini in the goal scorers' list, considering that both players are actively playing.

Griezmann is part of the France squad for the tournament and needs just two goals to catch up with his legendary countryman.
