Nigerian tactician, Finidi George, has reportedly quit his job as Super Eagles head coach after poor results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The former Enyimba coach served as an assistant manager to Jose Peseiro during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

He was named the new head coach of the Super Eagles last month after managing the team in the international friendlies against Ghana and Mali in March.

According to a report by Soccernet, Finidi George has quit his role as Nigeria's national team mentor after the Nigeria Football Federation decided to hire a foreign technical adviser.

In Finidi's first two competitive games, Nigeria drew against South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo before losing 2-1 to Gernot Rohr's Benin Republic in Ivory Coast.

Nigeria's two poor results in the World Cup qualifying games relegated it to fifth place in Group C, four points behind South Africa, Benin, and Rwanda.

NFF are yet to give an official update on what next for the Super Eagle, but will definitely appoint a new manager before the AFCON qualifiers begin in a few months.

Adepoju urges NFF against sacking Finidi

Sports Brief earlier reported that former Real Sociedad midfielder Mutiu Adepoju urged the NFF against sacking Finidi George.

The legendary Nigerian midfielder stressed the limited timeframe the recently appointed manager had to plan for the crucial qualification fixtures.

Super Eagles star backs Finidi George

Sports Brief also reported on Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, backing Finidi George to continue as Nigeria coach despite a challenging start to his tenure.

The ex-Union Berlin star commented on the former Enyimba FC coach's appointment, expressing the need to back the newly appointed national manager.
