Croatia’s Marcelo Brozović (96 caps) and Andrej Kramarić (93 caps), Netherlands’ Georginio Wijnaldum (93 caps), and Poland’s Kamil Grosicki (93 caps) could join the centurion club with strong performances.

In anticipation of Euro 2024, Sports Brief highlights the five players with the highest number of international caps.

5. Pepe – Portugal (137 caps)

Pepe, a stalwart in Portugal’s defence, is gearing up for his fifth European Championship. Since his debut in 2007, the Porto defender has accumulated 137 caps.

He has been named in the Team of the Tournament three times (Euro 2008, Euro 2012, and Euro 2016), sharing this record with Paolo Maldini, Laurent Blanc, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

He earned the man-of-the-match title in the Euro 2016 final. If he plays this summer, at 41, he will surpass Hungary’s Gabor Kiraly as the oldest player in European Championship history.

4. Robert Lewandowski – Poland (150 caps)

Robert Lewandowski may be facing his final tournament with Poland at Euro 2024.

The 35-year-old striker, leading his team as captain, will compete in a challenging group against the Netherlands, Austria, and France.

Lewandowski has netted 82 goals in 150 appearances, ranking him ninth in all-time international goal scorers, per PFSA.

Among active players, only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Romelu Lukaku have more goals. Unfortunately, he will miss Poland’s opening match against the Netherlands due to a thigh injury.

3. Jan Vertonghen – Belgium (154 caps)

Jan Vertonghen remains a key figure in Belgium’s defence.

The 37-year-old defender, part of Belgium’s ‘Golden Generation,’ now plays for Anderlecht after notable stints with Ajax and Spurs.

He is Belgium’s all-time appearance leader, having debuted 17 years ago.

2. Luka Modric – Croatia (175 caps)

Luka Modric is expected to make his final appearance for Croatia at Euro 2024. Widely regarded as Croatia’s greatest player, Modric has been instrumental in the national team’s recent successes.

He won the Ballon d’Or in 2018 following Croatia’s World Cup final appearance and helped them reach the semifinals in 2022, per UEFA.

Nearing his 39th birthday, Modric continues to excel, recently winning his sixth Champions League title with Real Madrid.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal (207 caps)

Cristiano Ronaldo's record-breaking achievements are well-documented.

The only player to have surpassed 200 international caps, he will participate in his sixth European Championship this summer.

Ronaldo is the sole player to have scored in five different European Championships and is the tournament’s all-time leading scorer with 14 goals.

He captained Portugal to victory in 2016 and remains a footballing icon whose records continue to expand.
