South African referee, who also doubles as a police officer, Akhona Ndzingo, has reportedly lost his life after being involved in a shooting incident in Cape Town on Wednesday.

Ndzingo was one of the young referees in the Premier Soccer League, making his official debut at the age of 26.

He was named the SAFA Cape Town Referee of the Year in 2016 at the young age of 22.

According to a report by iDiskiTimes, Ndzingo was shot dead on Wednesday, June 12, while he was on duty as a police officer in Khayelitsha, Site B.

The report also confirmed that the South African referee was shot by a suspect and was declared dead on arrival when rushed to Khayelitsha Hospital.

Thulani Njili, the president of the Lingelethu Local Football Association, confirmed in an interview with iDiskiTimes that Ndzingo is a huge loss to South Africa as a whole.

"We are saddened by the death of Akho; it's not only us, Lingelethu LFA, that has lost even the entire South Africa," he said.

Sports Brief earlier reported on Hugo Broos hailing on Bafana Bafana after a hard-fought draw against Nigeria in Uyo.

The Belgian manager made reference to travelling problems they faced and was proud that it didn't affect their performance.
