Super Eagles star, Taiwo Awoniyi, has backed Finidi George to continue as the Nigerian men's national team coach despite his poor start to his tenure.
The former Enyimba FC coach started his tenure with a 1-1 draw against South Africa in the World Cup qualifier on June 7, followed by a 2-1 loss to Gernot Rohr's Benin Republic.
After the loss against the Cheetahs on June 10, many Nigerians called for the coach's head as the Super Eagles sank to fifth place in Group C in the CAF qualifier table.
In an interview with SportsBoom, per Complete Sports, Awoniyi commented on Finidi's appointment and expressed his excitement about meeting him.

"We want to keep progressing, and it's good to welcome a new coach," he said. "I think it's a good appointment, and it will be good to meet him."
The former Liverpool striker is also optimistic about the Super Eagles squad despite their poor run of form under Finidi thus far.
"There's lots of us [Nigerian players] now playing in the highest leagues in different countries," he added. "That can only be a good thing and shows how strong we are."
The Nottingham Forest star believes the former Ajax winger should continue with the team's progression.

"You can never settle, ever, for what you have got in football. You can never stand still."
NFF chief makes admission about Finidi
Sports Brief also previously reported on a Nigeria Football Federation official making an admission regarding Finidi’s appointment as Super Eagles coach.
The official claimed that no interview process was undertaken when the former player was selected, due to a recommendation from NFF top brass.
