The 2024 European Championship in Germany begins on Friday, with several top players set to represent their nations.

Most of the countries at this year's competition have a couple of players with dual nationalities or having their origins elsewhere.

The French team has for years been dominated by players with their origins from Africa and that seems to be the new norm as the European nations tie down players born in their countries.

Sports Brief looks at 9 players with Ghanaian heritage set to compete for their European nations at the European championship.

Kevin Danso - Austria

Kevin Danso has been a regular member of the Austrian national team since his days in Germany with Augsburg. Born in Austria to Ghanaian parents, the RC Lens star has represented Austria at different tournaments. He usually spends his days off in Ghana.

Jeremy Doku - Belgium

The Manchester City winger, born in Belgium to Ghanaian parents, will represent the Red Devils at the competition. It is his first Euro championship with Belgium, having represented them at youth levels in the past. Doku was followed by Ghana for many years but decided to play for Belgium. He had an outstanding campaign with City, winning the Premier League in his first season.

Kobbie Mainoo - England

One of the most talked about youngsters in football today. At just 19, Mainoo will be making his first major tournament appearance for England at the European championship.

Following a remarkable campaign with Manchester United, Mainoo did enough to convince Gareth Southgate for a place in his team. He could have played for Ghana through his parents.

Benjamin Henrichs - Germany

Born to Ghanaian parents in Germany, Henrichs has already played for Germany at the World Cup, and he has consistently been the first choice right-back for the team in recent years. The RB Leipzig star will be hoping to win the tournament with Germany on home soil.

Memphis Depay - Holland

Depay is one of three players in the Dutch squad with Ghanaian heritage. The former Manchester United forward is a senior member of the team and could set new records with the Netherlands in Germany. Although he could not play for the Black Stars, Depay spends his vacation in Accra frequently.

Jeremie Frimpong - Holland

The Ghana FA has tried several times to convince the Bayer Leverkusen defender to play for the Black Stars, but Jeremie Frimpong preferred his European nation. He has however never hidden his love for Ghana. Meanwhile, after an outstanding campaign with the new German champions, Frimpong is eyeing success with the Netherlands.

Brian Brobbey - Holland

Brobbey was in Ghana last summer for the holidays, and it even sparked rumours of a potential switch of nationalities. However, the Ajax forward chose the Netherlands. He already has one appearance at the senior level for the Dutch national team and after an impressive campaign in the Eredivisie, he could be starting for the Netherlands.

Nicholas Williams - Spain

Nico Williams, the younger brother of Ghana international Inaki Williams, decided to play for Spain in 2022 despite interest from the Black Stars. He has been a regular for La Roja and he is set for another championship with his European nation after starring at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Kwadwo Duah - Switzerland

Duah was born to Ghanaian parents in England and moved to Switzerland at a very young age. He had the luxury of options but after playing for the Swiss youth national teams, he decided to make a step up. Ghana tried to persuade him in the past.

Makelele compares Kobbie Mainoo to Essien

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Claude Makelele compared Kobbie Mainoo to former Chelsea teammate Michael Essien.

The France legend sees a lot of similarities between the English-born Ghanaian and the former Ghana international Essien.

Makelele expects England manager Gareth Southgate to start the 19-year-old alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham in the starting line-up of the Three Lions at Euro 2024.
