The Nigerian football scene has been abuzz with discussions about Finidi George's ability to lead the Super Eagles to success, especially after the disappointing results against South Africa and the Republic of Benin.

The 53-year-old, who was appointed as manager after a lengthy recruitment process by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), started his tenure with what can only be described as a letdown for those who had high hopes for him.

The Super Eagles recorded a draw and a defeat in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series this month.

However, after Finidi's initial games as coach of the Super Eagles, a federation chief has reportedly confessed to the intricacies surrounding the recruitment process of the Nigeria coach.

NFF chief opens up on Finidi’s appointment

According to a report from OwnGoalNigeria, a high-ranking official of NFF, who chose to remain anonymous, claimed no formal interview was conducted for Finidi's appointment as coach.

Instead, the NFF president seemingly thrust him into the role, citing financial constraints as a primary factor.

"We did not conduct any interviews. The decision to appoint Finidi was made solely by the NFF president, and the members of the technical committee did not even recommend him.
"Nobody interviewed Finidi, which is why after his appointment, it took time to finalise the details of his contract termination with Enyimba, as well as those of his backroom staff," the federation official stated.

Recent reports suggest that the NFF may be contemplating parting ways with the manager, with a meeting already scheduled for next week between both parties.

According to data from FotMob, the recent defeat against the Republic of Benin on Monday marked Nigeria's first-ever competitive loss to the Cheetahs.

NFF begins the process of sacking Finidi

Sports Brief also previously reported that the NFF have initiated steps to sack Finidi following Nigeria’s defeat against Benin Republic.

In the two matches under the new coach's leadership, the Super Eagles have managed only a draw and suffered a defeat thus far.
