Kaizer Chiefs are back in the market again for a new coach following a disastrous campaign.

The Soweto giants finished 10th in the 2023/24 DStv Premiership under Cavin Johnson, who coached the team on an interim basis for most of the season.

A few years ago, club chairman, Kaizer Motaung, gave a detailed explanation of why local coaches have struggled at the club.

Johnson took over from Molefi Ntseki, who was let go seven months ago after just 114 days on the job. He was among the many local coaches who struggled to succeed at the club.

Arthur Zwane, Steve Komphela, Patrick Mabedi, Gavin Hunt, and Johnson are some local coaches who have had little success in the role.

Komphela was the first South African to stay in the role for over a year. The current Golden Arrows coach reached two cup finals with Amakhosi but lost both. Englishman, Stuart Baxter, was the last coach to bring a trophy to the club.

Motaung on Kaizer Chiefs local coaches

In 2020, Motaung said it boiled down to knowledge and used former Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Pitso Mosimane, as an example.

"It's not only at Kaizer Chiefs, but all the teams in the league. It's not really difficult, but it's about knowledge," he said via KickOff.
"Some of our local coaches need to work harder in terms of acquiring knowledge. We've seen the work coaches such as Pitso Mosimane and Gavin Hunt have done to improve themselves. We need more of that sort of commitment from all our local coaches."

The club have been linked with AS FAR Rabat coach, Nasreddine Nabi, who is reportedly the leading candidate to take over in the coming weeks, per SABC Sport.

4 issues facing Kaizer Chiefs

Sports Brief earlier reported on former Amakhosi star, David Kannemeyer, identifying four problems that have affected Kaizer Chiefs in the last few years.

The ex-defender faulted the club's planning, culture, philosophy, and scouting and called for a thorough clean-up if the PSL giants were to recapture any glory.
