Ronaldo's double downs Ireland

Before Ronaldo's double, Joao Felix opened the scoring against Ireland in the first half.

After recess, the 39-year-old took centre stage, delivering two spectacular strikes.

First, he unleashed a stunning left-footed shot, followed by a close-range finish, to secure Portugal's third goal and seal the victory for the Selecao.

These two goals further cemented his status as the greatest goal-scorer in football history, bringing his international tally to an impressive 130 goals in 207 appearances.

In doing so, he added yet another record to his name, becoming the first player in the history of Portugal to score in 21 consecutive years for the national team, per Centre Goals.

Year-by-year breakdown of Ronaldo's 130 goals

Ronaldo has scored for Portugal every year since netting his first goal against Greece in 2004, amassing over a century of international goals during that time.

His most prolific year was 2019, when he scored 14 goals, followed by 2016 and 2021, when he found the back of the net 13 times each.

His least productive years for the national team were 2008 and 2009, when he scored just one goal each.

Who holds the record for most consecutive goals in international football?

According to The Guardian, Sir Stanley Matthews holds the record for scoring goals in the most consecutive years in men's football.

The 1966 World Cup winner netted his first goal for England on September 29, 1934, against Wales, and his final goal for the Three Lions in a 1-1 draw with Northern Ireland on October 6, 1956.

This achievement means he scored in 22 consecutive years before retiring from his illustrious career.

Ronaldo earns GOAT praise after new hallmark

Sports Brief also reported that following his outstanding performance, which increased his international goal tally to 130, fans showered Cristiano Ronaldo with praise, with many declaring him the GOAT.

One user took a subtle dig at the Portuguese veteran's arch-rival, Lionel, Messi while commending the Portuguese star by claiming that the Argentine would 'collapse' trying to equal that feat for his nation.
