Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti, has assessed the Italian national team ahead of the 2024 European Championship and has appeared to agree with Jose Mourinho.

Italy beat England on penalties to win Euro 2020, which was played in 2021 across multiple cities in Europe due to the disruption caused to football by the coronavirus pandemic.

Roberto Mancini made way for Luciano Spalletti after Gli Azzurri failed to make the 2022 FIFA World Cup despite being European champions, losing 1-0 to minions, North Macedonia, during the playoffs.

The team also lost 3-0 to South American champions, Argentina, in the UEFA-CONMEBOL Finalissima, underlining the drop in performance since they conquered the continent.

Ancelotti downplays Italy's chances at Euro 2024

Speaking in an interview with Il Giornale, Ancelotti was asked if his country could defend its crown, but he was not optimistic.

"I think we lacked generational change after the victory in the last edition, so I don't really know what our chances might be. I will follow the matches on TV, with the luck of the time zone that will allow me to watch them in the morning," he said.

His assertion agrees with Fenerbahce boss, Mourinho, who claimed the Italians lacked the talent to defend their title.

"I don’t believe it, no. They don’t have a very talented squad, and I don’t believe they will win again," the Portuguese boss told O Jogo.

The former AC Milan boss fancied Germany’s chances, claiming they are interesting on home soil.

Ancelotti hails Mourinho as the greatest

Sports Brief previously reported on Carlo Ancelotti hailing Mourinho as the greatest while defending the Special One’s ‘parking the bus’ style of play, which many claim is outdated.

The two managers have managed Chelsea and Real Madrid and have a good relationship both on and off the pitch. They are also two of the most successful coaches of all time.
