Inter Miami star, Lionel Messi, gave an honest take when discussing the best clubs in world football in 2024.

Messi, who spent a large chunk of his career at Barcelona, snubbed the Catalan giants and instead named Manchester City and Real Madrid as the most formidable forces in club football.

Real Madrid completed the double on June 1, winning the UEFA Champions League at the expense of Borussia Dortmund, who lost 2-0 at Wembley.

Manchester City were knocked out of the competition in the quarter-final but had a successful season, winning their fourth successive league title and reaching the FA Cup final.

Despite Messi’s ties to Real Madrid’s eternal rivals, Barca, the Argentine admitted Carlo Ancelotti had cultivated the best team in their own right.

"Real Madrid is the best team in the world; they have won the Champions League," the 36-year-old said in an interview with Infobae, translated to English. "If you go by results, Real Madrid is the best."

The former Paris Saint-Germain forward then explained why he also considers Manchester City to be the best team, adding:

"If you go by the level of the game, I think Manchester City are the best. I personally like [Pep] Guardiola's City. I think that any team where Guardiola is will be special because of the way he is, the way he trains, and the way he works. He makes his teams play."

Despite leaving Barcelona more than a decade ago, the Spanish manager still maintains a solid personal relationship with the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

What next for Messi?

With the Copa America just days away, Messi is hoping to replicate the success in the tournament which he enjoyed in 2021, when he won his first major trophy with Argentina.

La Albiceleste will play in two friendly matches - against Ecuador and Guatemala - before officially launching their next Copa America campaign against Canada on June 21.

Rodrygo addresses comments about Manchester City

Sports Brief also previously reported on the controversy Real Madrid's Rodrygo courted after saying Man City were better than his team in the Champions League quarter-final.

The 23-year-old was a trending topic on social media towards the end of last month after his interesting comments describing their opposition as the greatest team in the world.
