Former Nigerian international Daniel Amokachi has stepped down from his position as an assistant to Super Eagles coach Finidi George.

Amokachi's decision comes two days before the all-important 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and South Africa.

As the Super Eagles re-grouped in Uyo ahead of the showdown, it was observed that Amokachi failed to show up.

Before the Nigeria Football Federation appointed Finidi as the new head coach, Amokachi was among the candidates who showed interest in the plum job.

Finidi bagged the coaching job with a salary of N15 million monthly, making him the highest-paid indigenous coach ever, Guardian reports.

The NFF, however, stated that assistant coaches would receive no salaries except match allowances and bonuses.

Former Nigerian international Emmanuel Babayaro charged that the conditions etched in the contracts of the assistants are demeaning.

Babayaro further clarified that Amokachi accepted to work with Finidi but will not work under the said conditions. The former goalkeeper wrote:

"Well, Daniel De Bull Amokachi said yes to the appointment as the Super Eagles assistant coach but an emphatic NO to the demeaning conditions attached thereto. And yes, the conditions were only just communicated recently.
"Now that you have your facts and are saved from unnecessary and narrow one-sided assumptions, go ahead with your comments.
"My only plea is to allow us concentrate on our game against South Africa tomorrow, unnecessary distractions are detrimental."

When Victor Ikpeba Warned Amokachi

Sports Brief earlier reported that former Nigerian international Victor Ikpeba reiterated to Daniel Amokachi that Finidi George is the head coach of the Super Eagles.

Citing concerns over the chaos that ripped apart the coaching crew three years ago, Ikpeba cautioned Amokachi, saying harmony must exist.

The former Super Eagles attacker further claimed that the working relationship between ex-internationals Emmanuel Amunike and Augustine Eguavoen did not work out well.
