The 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification match between Nigeria and South Africa is set to be a thrilling encounter, with intense exchanges and bold statements setting the stage.

Both African football powerhouses renew another instalment of their brewing rivalry, following the pulsating 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final fixture in Ivory Coast.

Ahead of the match, Super Eagles defender, Bright Osayi-Samuel, emphasised that Bafana Bafana are eager for revenge and Nigeria were keen to prevent that possibility.

The Fenerbahce defender referenced a video featuring a member of the South African coaching staff discussing their desire for payback, fueling the anticipation for Friday's game at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Osayi-Samuel speaks on South Africa clash

Speaking to the media, as reported by Onrise TV, the 26-year-old emphasised the importance of securing a victory against Hugo Broos’ side.

"The main objective is to win, and if you look at the players we have, everyone is relaxed but aware of the significance of this game. The main reason is that we drew the first two games, and we don't want to miss another opportunity."

Addressing the palpable talk of revenge coming from the South African camp, the former Queens Park Rangers star added:

"We beat them in AFCON, and I remember seeing a video of one of their coaches talking about wanting revenge. We know it’s very important, but I believe with the squad we have, we can beat them."

Nigeria will face South Africa on June 7, before taking on the Cheetahs of Benin Republic on June 11 in Ivory Coast, per a report by FotMob.

Finidi’s assistant quits role

Sports Brief also previously reported on claims that an assistant coach of the Super Eagles has seemingly resigned from his role with the Nigerian national team.

Rumours in the media have suggested Daniel Amokachi, who was appointed Finidi's assistant, has stepped down just days before their game against South Africa.
