The Super Eagles camp has reportedly been rocked by a new managerial issue ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification clash against South Africa.

The Nigerian team, set to face the resilient Bafana Bafana side, have struggled with seemingly unending distractions, and the latest is a report of one of the team’s assistant coaches reportedly quitting his role.

According to a report from OwnGoalNigeria, the first assistant coach to Finidi George, Daniel Amokachi, has quit his role with the national team.

Has Amokachi quit his Super Eagles role?

According to the report from the media outlet, there appears to be a power tussle within the coaching hierarchy.

Despite the fact that 51-year-old Amokachi was appointed as the team’s first assistant manager, Finidi seems to prefer working closely with Benjamin James, whom he handpicked and who currently serves as his second assistant.

The report, however, concludes by noting that members of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are in discussions with Amokachi, hoping to see him return to the role he assumed in April.

Meanwhile, Nigerian football expert, Tobi Adepoju, has stated that the assistant manager is displeased with the contract offered by the NFF, which is why he has decided to miss the upcoming fixture against South Africa.

So far, the football federation has remained quiet regarding the swirling reports, with none of its officials opting to clarify the situation with Amokachi.

Nigeria vs South Africa midfield battle

Sports Brief also previously reported that the crucial midfield battle could determine the outcome of the fixture between Nigeria and South Africa.

The qualification match is expected to feature a dynamic contest in the middle of the pitch, with both teams adopting a three-man defensive approach.

Both the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana will be seeking a critical victory, as it will significantly impact their trajectory towards World Cup qualification.
