Portugal called up Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes on Monday to replace injured Otavio Monteiro in their Euro 2024 squad.

The 25-year-old Nunes won the last of his 12 Portuguese caps in a friendly win against Sweden in March, in which he scored a goal.

But he did not appear as Portugal won all ten of their Euro qualifying games.

He moved to Manchester City from Wolves last September and appeared in 19 Premier League games as the club won the title, starting nine, per Yahoo Sports.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said Otavio was injured playing for his Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr. The FPF said their medical staff examined the 29-year-old on Monday and concluded he would not be fit for Euro 2024.

Best Players Left Out of Portugal's Euro 2024 Squad

William Carvalho

William Carvalho seemed destined for greatness in one of Europe’s top leagues, yet he never quite reached those heights. After impressive years at Sporting Lisbon, he joined Real Betis in La Liga, where he has maintained a steady presence.

Despite his solid tenure, Carvalho has not elevated his game to the next level. Having earned 80 caps for Portugal, with 11 appearances in 2022, he finds himself excluded from the Euro 2024 squad. His experience and midfield prowess would have been assets, but frequent bench appearances for Betis this season likely contributed to his omission.

Raphael Guerreiro

Injuries have unfortunately sidelined Raphael Guerreiro from Euro 2024. The versatile Bayern Munich player, capable of influencing games from both defence and midfield, would have been a valuable asset for Portugal.

An ankle injury just before the end of the 2023/24 season means Guerreiro will miss the tournament, watching as his nation aims for their second European Championship title in a decade.

Pedro Goncalves

Pedro Goncalves enjoyed a stellar season with Sporting, scoring 18 goals and providing 16 assists.

Despite his remarkable performances, the 25-year-old forward was surprisingly left out of Portugal’s Euro 2024 plans.

Goncalves has demonstrated his talent and still has ample time to secure his place in future international competitions.

Renato Sanches

Renato Sanches once seemed poised for stardom, especially after his standout performances at Euro 2016, where Portugal emerged victorious.

His subsequent move to Bayern Munich did not pan out as expected, leading to a series of underwhelming stints, including a loan to Swansea. A revival at Lille showcased his potential, but his move to Paris Saint-Germain has been less fruitful.

A loan to Roma this year did little to boost his career, resulting in his exclusion from the current Portuguese squad. At 26, Sanches still has time to reclaim his form and make a case for future international tournaments.
