Lionel Messi made history in Major League Soccer despite Inter Miami failing to pick up all maximum points in their 3-3 draw against St. Louis at the Chase Stadium.

Miami failed to bounce back after their last league game against Atlanta United, which ended in a 3-1 loss at home last weekend. They fought back to win a point this week.

Former Barcelona teammates Messi, Luis Suarez, and Jordi Alba all scored, with the Uruguayan forward also scoring an own goal that almost proved detrimental.

The draw leaves the Herons two points clear at the top of the MLS Eastern Conference table, ahead of Cincinnati FC, even though they have played two more games.

Lionel Messi makes MLS history

The Argentina captain’s goal means he has contributed to 25 league goals this season, and per MLS on X, it is an official record, having done that in 12 games.

He beat the previous record held by Carlos Vela, who hit the same number in 16 games for Los Angeles FC in the 2019 season, the same year he won the league's Golden Boot with 34 goals.

According to Transfermarkt, the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner has netted 24 goals for the Florida-based team, three behind Leonardo Campana in second and five behind Gonzalo Higuain.

He could become the outright top scorer for the club if he scores six more goals this season, despite only joining as a free agent in July 2023.

Messi fumes at MLS rule

Sports Brief reported on Messi fuming at an MLS rule during Inter Miami’s 3-2 victory over CF Montreal, his first match in Canada in his illustrious career.

After spending 15 seconds on the ground due to a knock, he was taken to the pitchside to be treated, where he would stay for two minutes due to the rule.
