Moroccan goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou was the hero of the day as Al-Hilal completed a domestic double after beating Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr in the final of the King's Cup.

The former Sevilla shot-stopper saved two penalties in the shootout as the Blue Waves went from a losing position to win the title, leaving Ronaldo and Al-Nassr heartbroken.

In a dramatic finale at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, the Saudi Pro League champions opened the scoring through Serbian forward Aleksandar Mitrovic in the 7th minute.

Things went from worse to bad for Al-Nassr after goalkeeper David Ospina was sent off just before the hour mark.

But late into the game, Al-Hilal saw two players sent off in quick succession after defenders Ali Albulayhi and Kalidou Koulibaly received red cards.

In between the sending-offs was the equaliser from Ayman Yahya to force the game into extra-time.

With both teams huffing and puffing, the match had to be decided from the spot with Bounou, the best goalkeeper from the Saudi Pro League, denying the Knights of Najd with his two heroic saves, as spotted on social media.

After Alex Telles and Ruben Neves had their first spot kicks missed, Bounou then denied Ali Alhassan and Meshari Al-Nemer, as reported by Reuters.

Ronaldo left in tears after defeat

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Al-Nassr talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo was inconsolable after his side suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Al-Hilal in the Saudi King's Cup final.

The 39-year-old, who was chasing his maiden major silverware with the Knights of Najd, saw his side agonisingly miss out on the trophy to their local rivals.

Having posted a new single-season best for the Saudi Pro League, after registering 35 goals in that competition, Ronaldo was poised to cap his first full campaign with a title.

Bounou and Mendy keep most clean sheets in SPL

Sports Brief also reported that Senegal and Morocco goalkeepers, Edouard Mendy and Yassine Bounou ended their first season in the Saudi Pro League as the shot-stoppers with the most clean sheets.

The African duo impressed in their first campaign with Al-Ahli and Al-Hilal, with Bounou winning the league title with the latter.

Mendy and Bounou kept 15 clean sheets at the end of the 2023/24 Saudi Pro League season, according to the SPL.
