The buildup to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series is gaining momentum, with Nigeria preparing to take on South Africa and the Republic of Benin.

The games, which are undoubtedly make-or-break fixtures for the Super Eagles given their poor start to the qualification campaign, will see some of the players who featured at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast miss out due to injuries.

However, not to be deterred by the flurry of injuries faced by Finidi George's side, captain of the team, Ahmed Musa, has stressed his desire for the games against Bafana Bafana and the Cheetahs.

Musa states desire for South Africa, Benin games

In an interview reported by the media outlet Score Nigeria, the 2013 AFCON winner emphasised the importance of the Super Eagles claiming victory against both nations.

"Everyone understands the significance of both games, and the players are aware of what’s at stake."

Expressing his desire and expectations for his teammates, the 31-year-old stated,

"I want them to go all out and win both games."

Musa, who has made over 100 appearances for the Super Eagles, was part of the Nigerian team that secured a thrilling victory in the AFCON semi-final against South Africa in Ivory Coast.

The versatile forward also contributed to the Nigerian team's victory against Benin in the qualifiers for the 2021 AFCON.

The Super Eagles will host South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on June 7 in Uyo before flying out three days later for another World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic in Ivory Coast.

Currently, the Nigerian team sit third in Group C standings with two points following draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Finidi makes changes to Nigeria’s squad

Sports Brief in another report stated that Coach Finidi has made changes to Nigeria’s squad for the World Cup qualification games.

The 53-year-old was forced to make a change due to the withdrawal of Nathan Tella from the team.
