However, many lesser-known facts about Edin Terzic's squad remain, including the origins of their iconic BVB moniker.

While Borussia is Latin for Prussia, in Dortmund's case, it originated from a sign for Borussia-Brauerei, an advertisement for a local brewery, displayed on the wall of Zum Wildschutz, a pub where the club's founders convened in 1909.

Over a century later, Dortmund has undergone numerous transformations, from alterations to the crest to the shift from original blue and white striped kits. Yet, the name BVB has endured, per Diario AS.

Why are Borussia Dortmund called BVB?

The abbreviation 'BVB', pronounced in German as 'bay-fow-bay', is Dortmund's shorthand reference for the club, widely embraced by both the team and its supporters. It originates from the club's official name, Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund, per Bundesliga.

In German, when an organization is registered, it is designated as eingetragener Verein, abbreviated as 'e.V.', while '09' signifies the club's founding year of 1909.

Interestingly, the 'BV' in 'BVB' actually derives from the first part of the compound word Ballspielverein.

This compound word merges two existing terms — 'Ballspiel' (ball game) and 'Verein' (club) — to denote the sport the club participated in at its inception.

In Dortmund's case, their designation as 'Ballspielverein' suggests their focus on ball sports, notably football, with the additional 'B' representing Borussia. As the club has evolved, fans have contributed by suggesting that 'BVB' also symbolises Borussen vom Borsigplatz.

Translated as 'Borussia fans from Borsigplatz', this phrase pays homage to the supporters hailing from the Borsigplatz area, a square located in the northern district of Dortmund where the founding pub, Zum Wildschutz, once stood.
