Cesc Fabregas has asserted that Arsenal must secure a top-tier striker this summer to surpass Manchester City and clinch the Premier League title.

For the second consecutive season, the Gunners narrowly missed breaking their 20-year title drought, as Pep Guardiola's team clinched their fourth consecutive championship with an eight-game winning streak.

Arsenal's title bid lacked a prolific goal-scorer, with Bukayo Saka - their leading scorer - netting 16 goals and eight players across the league outscoring him.

In the latter half of the season, Mikel Arteta utilised Kai Havertz in a false nine role, while traditional strikers Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah managed to score only four and five goals, respectively.

Fabregas believes this is a critical area that Arsenal must improve over the summer.

He has encouraged his old club to pursue a proven goal-scorer and also emphasised the need for greater squad depth going forward.

Cesc Fabregas speaks on Arsenal woes

When asked on BBC Sounds' Planet Premier League podcast whether Arteta needs additional cover or a few marquee signings, Fabregas responded:

"Yes, they do need a bit of depth to keep pushing, pushing, pushing during the season and not rely always on Saka or [Declan] Rice or [Thomas] Partey if he’s injured or not, or on [William] Saliba.
"But also, in my opinion - and he’s done really, really well but obviously it’s not his main position - Havertz, he’s had a fantastic season, but if Arsenal can manage to get a top, top striker that can guarantee you 30 goals a season, then they will be much, much, much closer to getting it [the title]."

Teams that failed to win EPL despite huge points

After coming close to ending their Premier League title drought, Arsenal ultimately fell short against Manchester City.

Sports Brief explored other teams that accumulated a significant number of points but failed to clinch an EPL trophy.

Liverpool, Manchester United, and Arsenal have all experienced the frustration of missing out on the title in the past.
