Not all hope is lost for Marcus Rashford, who could still make Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024, albeit under extraordinary circumstances.

The England manager unsurprisingly omitted the 26-year-old from his provisional 33-man squad for the tournament, which kicks off on June 14.

Southgate appeared to have taken his star forward’s subdued club performance in the 2023/24 season into account when making his selection, as Rashford only managed eight goals all season.

As reported by Sky Sports, Jordan Henderson, Reece James, Raheem Sterling, Nick Pope, and Ben Chilwell were among the other notable omissions from England's 33-man team shortlist.

Can Rashford get called up per selection rules?

Despite failing to make the provisional squad, the rules on team selection could offer Rashford a glimmer of hope.

According to talkSPORT, players who were initially left out of their international squads could still get called up.

However, rules around late squad replacements are set to be stricter for the Euro 2024, as a time frame is in place.

The only way Rashford can be called up is if another player pulls out through injury or illness before the start of the tournament.

How long do teams have?

Teams will have until the day before the start of the tournament to replace injured or ill players with an alternative. Once the tournament kicks off, no changes can be made to a manager’s final squad.

Since preliminary squads have already been submitted by international managers ahead of the Euros, the final 26-man squad should be out by June 7.

In Rashford’s case, if he is to replace a different player in the England squad, it must happen before then.

England’s attacking options for Euro 2024

Southgate has an array of options in the attacking front, as he selected 12 forwards in his provisional squad.

This included Jude Bellingham, (Real Madrid), Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), James Maddison (Tottenham Hotspur), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ivan Toney (Brentford), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).

If Rashford is to make a late entry into the squad, one of these players would have to withdraw before the final 26-man list is submitted.

Marcus Rashford’s response to England snub

Sports Brief also previously reported on how Rashford reacted to getting snubbed by Gareth Southgate ahead of the 2024 Euro tournament.

The Manchester United ace sent a classy message on social media, wishing the Three Lions of England all the best at the event in Germany.
