Marcus Rashford subtly accepted his fate through a social media message, moments after he was left out of England’s provisional 33-man squad for the upcoming Euro 2024.

The 26-year-old has struggled for form this campaign, scoring just seven goals and getting two assists in 33 Premier League appearances.

These stats were a far cry from the campaign he had in 2022/2023, and his disappointing campaign has seen him left out of the Three Lions squad.

England boss, Gareth Southgate, had some notable names in his 33-man list, including several Premier League title winners from Manchester City.

Rashford is, however, not the only big name to miss out on the provisional squad. Former Liverpool man Jordan Henderson, Newcastle United’s Nick Pope and the Chelsea trio of Reece James, Raheem Sterling, and Ben Chilwell also missed out.

Rashford’s social media response

Rashford, who played for England seven times this season before being left out of the game against Belgium, responded to the snub on social media, wishing England the best in the upcoming tournament.

“Wishing Gareth and the boys all the best for the up and coming tournament,' the Manchester United academy graduate wrote on his social media channel,” he wrote on Instagram.

What Southgate said

Southgate admitted it was not an easy decision to leave out Rashford, whom he gave 57 of the England star’s 60 caps.

“These are of course difficult calls,” the manager said, per BBC.
“With Marcus, I just feel that players in that area of the pitch have had better seasons, it's as simple as that.”

The England boss’ provisional squad has 12 forwards, and several of them are capable of playing in Rashford’s preferred left side.

Eberechi Eze makes England squad

Still in the England squad, Southgate included Crystal Palace winger Eberechi Eze due to the 25-year-old’s superb form for his club this season.

As Sports Brief reported, the Crystal Palace midfielder, who was born in London to Nigerian parents, has made one appearance for England in the past but has never represented the Three Lions at a major tournament.

Eze started his career at Arsenal but left the Gunners at the age of 13 to further his career, signing his first professional contract with Queens Park Rangers in 2016 before joining the Eagles four years later.
