Mamelodi Sundowns are on the verge of breaking several records and setting new ones as the 2023/2024 DStv Premiership season wraps up.

Rulani Mokwena's side is set to end the season on an incredible note as they inch close to finishing the season with an unprecedented unbeaten run.

Their 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch on Saturday brings the team's total to 72 points, smashing their own record of 71 points in a single 16-team season.

The Brazilians have also broken the PSL record for most unbeaten away games, as they take that tally to 26.

As they claim a seventh consecutive league title, here are seven records Mamelodi Sundowns will break.

1. Invincibility

If Sundowns could avoid defeat in their last two matches, they would become the first team in South Africa's top flight to go an entire season without defeat.

The two teams that can deny Mokwena's side such a historic feat are TS Galaxy and Cape Town City.

2. Most wins

Sundowns have already registered 22 wins this season, equalling their own record of the 2015/2016 season.

One more victory in any of their final two matches will see them set a new record for most wins in a season.

3. Clean sheets

They can also match the clean sheet record set by Kaizer Chiefs last term.

Sundowns have already kept a staggering 20 clean sheets this season and can set a new record if they don’t concede at TS Galaxy and home to Cape Town City FC.

4. Goals scored

During the 2021/2022 season, Sundowns set a record for most goals, having found the back of the net 56 times.

With two matches left this season, the Brazilians, who have scored 51, need five goals to match that feat, and they could also surpass the record, The South African reports.

5. Most league doubles in a season

Another unique record that could be set by the end of the season is the record for most league doubles in a season.

They registered their eighth double after their win over Stellenbosch FC, having earlier defeated them 3-1. They will have a chance to break their own record with a victory over TS Galaxy on Tuesday.

7. Gap between 1st and 2nd

There is currently a huge gap between the league leaders and Stellenbosch, the second-position side. This highlights how far teams are from challenging Mamelodi Sundowns next season.

Sundowns are currently on 72 points, while the Stellies have 50, leaving a 22-point gap. The maximum point-gap record between first and second in the PSL is 16.

Pirates backed to challenge Sundowns next season

Sports Brief earlier reported that former Pirates and Sundowns star Teko Modise believes Orlando Pirates are in an excellent position to challenge Masandawana's dominance next season.

Pirates have not won the DStv Premiership since 2012.

The Buccaneers finished second last season and were expected to compete with giants Mamelodi Sundowns this season, but that has not materialized.
