Kaizer Chiefs legendary goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, has said his journey in football is not over yet despite playing his last season with the club.

The veteran was honoured on Saturday, May 18, during Chiefs' goalless draw with Polokwane City in the DStv Premiership.

In June 2023, Kaizer Chiefs handed Khune his final contract. He is currently playing in his 20th season at the club.

The 36-year-old spent five years at the club's developmental structures before he earned a spot in the senior team in the 2004/05 season. He made his debut against Jomo Cosmos in August 2007 at the age of 20.

Since then, he has made over 400 appearances for the club and won the DStv Premiership three times (2005, 2013, 2015).

He has barely played this season. The club suspended him for disciplinary reasons in December, but he returned to training in March.

On Saturday, he played the final 15 minutes of their final home game of the season, perhaps his last in front of Amakhosi supporters.

Khune discusses his future

Speaking after the match against Polokwane, Khune insisted that his football story is not over. He claimed the celebration on Saturday was not a farewell.

“This journey is still long,” he said via iDiski Times. "It’s not a farewell. The club made it clear that they are honouring me for 25 years of service. They didn’t say, ‘we’re bidding farewell to Itumeleng Khune’".

Khune hinted at what his next move will be after this season.

“We’re still going to see each other, we’re still going to travel together, as much as we have been traveling and I appreciate everything that everyone has done for me."
“My legs can still carry me for the next couple of years, so I will continue giving my all whenever given the opportunity to don the black and gold jersey of Kaizer Chiefs.”

Johnson on Chiefs celebrating Khune

Sports Brief earlier reported on Kaizer Chiefs interim coach, Cavin Johnson, weighing in on the club honouring Khune against Polokwane City.

Johnson was happy for Khune and expressed his team's admiration for the legendary Bafana Bafana goalkeeper.
