Finidi George is expected to make adjustments to his squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin next month in two make-or-mar games for the Super Eagles.

The 53-year-old tactician had reportedly submitted a 35-man squad to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) ahead of both games but injuries to some of the key players have forced the changes.

According to Own Goal Nigeria, a final 25-man list is set to be picked and announced to the public by the NFF next week with as many as 10 players being axed from the initial list submitted.

Samuel Chukwueze, Bruno Onyemaechi, Moses Simon, Tyrone Ebuehi, and Zaidu Sanusi are some of the Super Eagles players currently battling with injuries and most likely will miss the World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria, who are third in Group C behind Rwanda and South Africa with two points, will host Bafana Bafana at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on June 7, before travelling to Ivory Coast to take on Benin a few days later.

Finidi George's targets disclosed by NFF

Meanwhile, NFF president, Ibrahim Gusau, has said that Finidi has the mandate to qualify the Super Eagles for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and 2026 FIFA World Cup, Complete Sports reports.

The former Real Betis star has been offered a two-year contract to take charge of the team as head coach after serving as assistant to Jose Peseiro, who led Nigeria to win a silver medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Finidi’s first task as Super Eagles head coach will be to lead the team in two must-win World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin in June.

Amokachi urged to support Finidi

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that former Super Eagles striker Victor Ikpeba has given a rallying cry to Daniel Amokachi, encouraging him to support Finidi for the sake of the national team.

Despite Amokachi's 18-year coaching experience, which includes stints as the national team's assistant coach and caretaker manager, Ikpeba emphasised the necessity of respecting Finidi's authority in order to avoid a repeat of previous disagreements.
