Mamelodi Sundowns stretched their unbeaten streak to an impressive 50 games in the DStv Premiership after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Royal AM at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday, May 11.

Peter Shalulile was the hero for the Brazilians, finding the back of the net with a superb flying header in the 85th minute to secure a vital three points for Rulani Mokwena.

Despite the Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions' efforts, clear-cut chances were scarce for both sides, with Royal AM also unable to threaten Denis Onyango's goal on the counter.

With the victory, Mokwena's side now sit comfortably on 66 points, still within reach of breaking the points record with four matches remaining.

Meanwhile, Royal AM's struggle at the bottom continues, as they remain on 29 points, with a five-point cushion above the relegation/promotion playoff spot occupied by Richards Bay.

Mokwena named Coach of the Month

As per Goal, Mokwena was recently awarded the DStv Premiership Coach of the Month for April after guiding Masandawana to their seventh consecutive league title.

Despite the demanding schedule, which included league fixtures, domestic cup matches, and CAF Champions League encounters, Sundowns showcased resilience and consistency.

The 37-year-old is under mounting pressure to secure the continental title, and has stressed the arduous nature of continental football, drawing parallels to Pitso Mosimane's four-year journey to clinch the trophy.

"I was an assistant coach to the previous coach [Mosimane] for a very long time, and the last coach was here for eight years. We only played the semi-final twice because we got into the final the other time. But after that, in eight years, we only played the semi-final once and lost," he said, as reported by The South African.

Mokwena still hurt by Champions League exit

Sports Brief reported that Mokwena was still hurt by Sundowns' defeat in the CAF Champions League defeat at the hands of Esperance.

He stated that claiming the treble this season would not make up for the disappointment of exiting in the semi-finals.

Mokwena believes that adding another trophy to the Sundowns collection will not erase the pain of their loss on the continental stage.
