Gabon forward, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, was left heartbroken after Olympique Marseille failed to reach the final of the Europa League following defeat in Italy to Atalanta.

The French giants were demolished 3-0 at the Gewiss Stadium, ending their run in the competition after a 4-1 aggregate loss over the two legs of the semi-final.

Goals from Ademola Lookman of Nigeria, Metteo Ruggeri, and Bilal El Toure of Mali were enough for the Italians to outwit the former European champions.

Aubameyang, who leads the goal-scoring chart in the competition with 10 strikes, was left emotional after the match in Bergamo.

In a video that has since gone viral on social media, the veteran forward was seen breaking down in tears as he left the pitch.

The former Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona forward has been in terrific form since returning to France to join the Ligue 1 giants, scoring 27 goals in 48 games across all competitions, per Transfermarkt.

Marseille, who had a terrible start to the campaign, have steadily climbed up the table since the appointment of former Ivory Coast coach, Jean-Louis Gasset, in 2024.

Aubameyang excels in Europa League

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Aubameyang was in the top team of the Europa League quarter-finals following his outstanding performance against Benfica.

The Gabonese international scored and assisted in Marseille’s victory despite the game ending up in penalties, with the French side winning from the spot.

Aubameyang kept the tie alive in Portugal last month as he pulled one back to halve a two-goal deficit, before assisting Faris Moumbagna's equaliser.

Lookman shines as Atalanta beat Marseille

Sports Brief also reported that Ademola Lookman led Atalanta to the final of the Europa League after starring in the second leg of the semi-final against Marseille in Italy.

The Nigerian international scored once and also provided an assist as the Serie A side recorded a resounding 3-0 victory at the Gewiss Stadium on Thursday evening.

The Italian side will now face high-flying newly-crowned Bundesliga champions, Bayer Leverkusen, in the Europa League's last round at Wembley Stadium on June 1.
