Andre Onana has endured a frustrating start to life since he sealed a sensational move to Manchester United in the summer of 2023.

The Red Devils signed the Cameroonian from Inter Milan to replace David de Gea, who was departing the club after more than a decade.

Fresh from helping Inter Milan reach the 2022/23 Champions League final, many had backed Onana as the perfect replacement for De Gea.

However, the former Ajax star has struggled to settle in at Old Trafford, with his mixed run of performances contributing to United's disastrous campaign this season.

To put Onana's struggles into more perspective, the shotstopper has dropped several clang errors this season, including conceding a penalty against Burnley recently.

So how does his performances compare with De Gea's during the Spaniard's final Premier League season at the Theatre of Dreams?

Onana vs De Gea in numbers

Onana has obviously already conceded more goals so far (55) compared to De Gea's 43, in a campaign that saw him win the Golden Glove Award.

At the time, the former Spain international kept 17 clean sheets, nine more than Onana's eight.

Despite Onana shipping in more goals, he has evidently faced more shots than De Gea did last season.

The Cameroon international has, in the process, made 135 saves, 36 more than his predecessor's 99.

As such, he has a higher save percentage (74.6%) compared to De Gea's 71.1%

De Gea yet to find club

Meanwhile, De Gea is yet to find a club close to a year since he departed Manchester United.

A return to football was thought to be on the horizon last summer, with a move to the Saudi Pro League mooted.

The 33-year-old was also linked with a possible move to Inter Milan to replace Onana, while Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, were also thought to be interested.

However, he recently sparked speculation he could be plotting a return to football after he shared an update on Instagram, with the caption: "I'll be back."
