Paris Saint-Germain have set an unwanted Champions League record after getting eliminated in the semi-finals of the tournament.

The French giants were sent packing after a 2-0 aggregate defeat against Borussia Dortmund.

The Luis Enrique-tutored side suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of the tie played in Germany.

They were hoping to turn around the fixture in the return leg at home on Tuesday night, May 7, only for them to suffer another 1-0 defeat.

Mats Hummels was responsible for the goal, with the German star finding the back of the net in the 50th minute to all but seal PSG's fate.

PSG make unwanted UCL history

While the outcome of the tie would insinuate PSG were poor, it is actually far from it.

According to SPORTbible, the French side hit the woodwork on six occasions across the two legs, with four of those coming in the second leg.

Kylian Mbappe, Warren Zaire-Emery, Nuno Mendes, and Vitinh all came agonisingly close to finding the back of the net for PSG.

Per Opta, the Ligue 1 serial winners now hold an unwanted record in the Champions League.

This season, they have rattled the woodwork a staggering 12 times, the most by any team since Opta started collecting data in 2003/04.

Barcelona, who at one time hit the woodwork 11 times years back, have been the holders of that record.

PSG's elimination from the Champions League further delays their dream of conquering Europe.

They are yet to taste European glory in their history despite heavy investments made by their current owners in the recent past.

The closest they have come was when they made it to the final in Lisbon, only to lose to Bayern Munich.

UCL ref breaks down

Earlier, Sports Brief also reported on the Champions League cracker pitting Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund being marked with emotional scenes after the full-time whistle.

Daniele Orsato was the centre referee during the clash.
