The Buccaneers defeated Chippa United 3-1 to earn their spot in the final, while the Brazilians ended Stellenbosch FC’s 25-game unbeaten streak to advance.

With the two sides set to meet in the final, Sports Brief looks at the previous occasions they have met in the Nedbank Cup.

3 Pirates vs Sundowns Nedbank Cup fixtures

The cup competition was founded in 1971 as the Life Challenge Cup and has been known as the Nedbank Cup since 2008.

In the past 16 years, Sundowns and Pirates have only met three times in the competition, with all of those games coming in the quarter-final stage.

Pirates 2-1 Sundowns

In 2014, the Sea Robbers beat the Brazilians 2-1 to book their place in the semi-finals.

Oupa Manyisa gave his side the lead in the sixth minute from the penalty spot, but their lead was cancelled in the 24th minute when Elias Pelembe scored for Masandawana.

Pirates would get the winner in the second half when Daine Klate’s free-kick fooled everyone and flew into the back of the net, Soccer Laduma reported.

Pirates 2-0 Sundowns (After Extra Time)

The second time the two sides met in the competition was a much tighter affair.

In 2016, Pirates beat Sundowns again but needed extra time to do so. After 90 minutes, the two teams were 0-0, but the Buccaneers tied the game before it went to penalties.

Tendai Ndoro scored in the 110th minute, and Mpho Makola grabbed a second in the 120th minute.

Sundowns 4-1 Pirates

The Brazilians finally got their revenge the last time the two sides met.

Peter Shalulile scored in the 12th minute, but Tshegofatso Mabasa levelled matters at the half-hour mark. Themba Zwane restored their lead in the 49th minute before Lesedi Kapinga made it three in the 78th minute.

Hlompho Kekana scored in the 86th minute after an assist from Shalulile.
