Robert Lewandowski's choice of the world's best player could ruffle a few feathers at FC Barcelona.

The Polish striker has faced a challenging season with La Blaugrana in his second year, with the team set to finish without any silverware.

Barca's hopes of retaining the La Liga title have also dwindled after a heartbreaking defeat to a Jude Bellingham-inspired Real Madrid in El Clasico.

Despite having a game in hand, they trail their rivals by 14 points with just five matches remaining.

Their dreams of Champions League glory were also dashed in the quarter-finals, suffering a surprising 4-1 loss to a Kylian Mbappe-led PSG at home, resulting in a 6-4 aggregate defeat, as noted by the BBC.

Lewandowski names current world's best player

In the build-up to Barcelona's upcoming La Liga fixture against Valencia, Lewandowski was asked about his opinion on the current elite players in world football.

Interestingly, the 35-year-old mentioned two players who have recently dealt blows to Barcelona's aspirations.

He named Bellingham, who scored the decisive goal in El Clasico for Real Madrid, and Mbappe, who netted a brace in PSG's Champions League quarter-final victory over Barcelona.

"It’s difficult to say because we still have the Euros to play and the decisive matches in the Champions League. But at this moment, Mbappe and Bellingham are the most outstanding players in the world," as per an interview with Bild.

Bellingham, Mbappe lead race for 2024 Ballon d'Or

The 2024 Ballon d'Or race is heating up, with Bellingham and Mbappe emerging as frontrunners, as Sports Brief previously reported.

While Lionel Messi's chances of retaining the coveted prize are slim, last year's runner-up, Erling Haaland, has slipped down the rankings.

Currently, Bellingham leads the pack, closely followed by Bayern Munich's Harry Kane and Mbappe in third place in the Ballon d'Or race.
