The league's entertaining style encourages even defenders to contribute offensively. Over the years, talented full-backs have showcased their versatility, proving vital to their teams' success.

Recently, a Liverpool player broke the record for most assists by a defender in the league.

Sports Brief highlights the top eight assist-making defenders in Premier League history.

Defenders with most Premier League assists

Gary Neville – 35

Gary Neville is a Manchester United legend. He won the Premier League 12 times while serving as an incredible Red Devil. Having played 400 times in the league alone, he had a lengthy and distinguished career at the club.

The full-back, who graduated with the class of 1992, contributed 35 assists throughout that time.

Cezar Azpilicueta – 35

Cezar Azpilicueta has 334 Premier League matches under his belt and 35 assists. He nearly signed for FC Barcelona in the summer of 2022, but he ultimately decided to stay at Chelsea, where he has had great success.

Under the guidance of Graham Potter, he serves as the Blues' captain.

Andy Hinchcliffe – 36

Although Andy Hinchcliffe was raised in Manchester City, he distinguished himself while playing for Everton. In just 219 games in the English top division, he contributed 36 assists. The defender was a Sheffield Wednesday player as well.

Ian Harte – 36

Despite growing up in Manchester City, Andy Hinchcliffe made a name for himself as an Everton player. He made 36 assists in just 219 games in the highest league in England. The defender was also a member of Sheffield Wednesday.

Graeme Le Saux – 44

In 327 games, Graeme Le Saux recorded 44 assists. In the history of the league, he is one of just four defenders with more than 40 assists. The full-back was a player for Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, and Chelsea. Along with Blackburn, he won the league.

Leighton Baines – 53

The previous record holder for the most assists a defender has had in Premier League history was Leighton Baines. In the league, he made 420 appearances and recorded 53 assists.

The full-back, who played for Wigan and most famously Everton, had a lethal set-piece delivery.

Andrew Robertson – 58

Andrew Robertson and his teammate share the top spot. The left-back has played in 231 games. He will undoubtedly help Liverpool FC's Trent Alexander-Arnold in the future to increase his total of assists. He has played for Hull City as well.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 58

The Premier League's all-time leading assist leader is Trent Alexander-Arnold. The full-back for Liverpool provides excellent set pieces. Most of his assists come from corners for him.

Interestingly, the English international holds the record for most assists by a defender in a single Premier League season with 13.
