The 2024 UEFA Euro tournament is upon us, and some of football's finest goal scorers will be battling it out to clinch the prestigious Golden Boot award at the tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo etched his name into the history books at the previous edition in 2021 after his late brace against Hungary at the Puskas Arena, in Portugal’s opening group-stage fixture.

The Portugal captain's double saw him eclipse France football icon, Michel Platini, to sit atop as the undisputed highest goal scorer in the history of the Euros tournament.

With the 17th edition of the tournament set to headline European football in the summer, Sports Brief spotlights the highest goal-scorers in the history of the Euro tournament.

Highest goal-scorers in the history of the Euros

Cristiano Ronaldo - Portugal: 14 goals

The Portuguese maestro made history at the much-celebrated 60th anniversary of the tournament with a brace in the final minutes of Portugal's group-stage clash against Hungary.

The quick double by the veteran saw him top the list of most goals in Euros history. The then-Juventus star went on to score five goals in the 2020 edition to take his goal tally to 14.

Michel Platini - France: 9 goals

The three-time Ballon d'Or winner closely trails Ronaldo on the list of highest goal-scorers at the Euro championship.

The French football icon boasts a staggering nine goals in his five appearances at the showpiece.

Remarkably, all nine goals scored by Platini came in a single edition of the competition - the 1984 championships, which he eventually won with the France national team.

Alan Shearer - England: 7 goals

The former England and Newcastle United forward found the back of the net seven times across three editions of the competition between 1992 and 2000.

The Premier League's all-time leading scorer is also the Three Lions’ top scorer at the tournament.

Antoine Greizmann - France: 7 goals

The French attacker shares the third spot on the Euros scoring list with Shearer. The then-Barcelona forward finished the 2016 edition of the showpiece as the top scorer. However, his tournament ended in a disappointing manner with a defeat in the final in Paris.

The Atletico Madrid forward found the back of the net six times in seven appearances in his stellar outing in his home country and added a solitary goal in his four appearances at the 2020 edition.

Alvaro Morata - Spain: 6 goals

The Spanish captain has found the back of the net six times in his previous two editions. The Atletico Madrid forward is currently La Roja’s highest goal-scorer in the history of the Euros.

The former Real Madrid man became Spain's all-time top scorer when he equalised against Italy in the semi-final of Euro 2020. He surpassed Fernando Torres’ tally of five goals at the same edition.

Morata currently boasts the accolade of being the sole Spanish player in history to have scored at least three goals in consecutive editions of the Euros (2016 and 2020).

The list of other players with incredible goal tallies at the Euros also includes stars like Thierry Henry, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Patrick Kluivert, Romelu Lukaku, Alvaro Morata, and Nuno Gomes, who have all scored six goals apiece during their respective appearances at the European competition.

Euro player of the tournament past winners

Sports Brief in another report compiled a list of the past winners of the UEFA Euro Player of the Tournament award.

This prestigious list includes Italy's Gianluigi Donnarumma, and France's Zinedine Zidane, among other elite players to have graced the showpiece.
