Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, has pledged to go to great lengths to ensure the El Clasico match between Real Madrid and his club is replayed if Lamine Yamal's disputed goal is deemed legitimate.

In Sunday's highly anticipated clash, Real Madrid secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over their arch-rivals, Barcelona, marking their third consecutive win against the Catalan giants across all competitions.

However, the match was marred by controversy, particularly surrounding Lamine's 'phantom goal' in the first half.

The young talent, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the match, saw his goal disallowed by the referee after consultation with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), much to the dismay of Barca.

The pivotal moment raised questions about whether the ball had crossed the goal line, a situation where goal-line technology (GLT) would typically intervene.

However, GLT is not utilised in the Spanish La Liga, leaving the decision solely in the hands of the officials. With video evidence inconclusive, many viewers were left perplexed by the ruling to disallow the goal.

Laporta vows to ensure El Clasico replay

Laporta, echoing the sentiments of numerous Barcelona supporters, expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision and vowed to take action.

He stated his intention to 'move mountains' to ensure the match is replayed if it is determined that Lamine's goal should have been allowed.

"If it is confirmed that it was a legal goal, we will move ahead and we do not discount requesting that the game be replayed, just as has happened in another game in Europe due to a VAR error," he wrote in a lengthy statement as cited by Sky Sports.
"Finally, I would like to underline that despite our focus on this incident, we also disagree with various others that occurred during the game, and that could have been reviewed using VAR."

Has a game been replayed due to VAR error?

Yes - in January, the BBC reported that a Belgian Pro League fixture featuring Anderlecht and Genk would be replayed entirely due to an error by the video assistant referee (VAR).

The decision came after Genk successfully appealed to the country's disciplinary council for professional football, citing a misinterpretation of the rules of the game.

Barcelona coach Xavi criticises La Liga

Sports Brief reported that Xavi Hernandez criticised La Liga for failing to introduce goal-line technology after Real Madrid's controversial win put them on the brink of winning the title.

The Barcelona coach expressed frustration when Lamine Yamal's shot, which the Catalan giants believed had crossed the line, was not counted as a goal because VAR could not confirm it.
